Patient Engagement, Cybersecurity, AI and More: Health Themes at HIMSS18
| Jessica Behrendsen & Angela Masciarelli
After months of planning, it’s hard to believe another HIMSS Annual Conference is already in the rearview mirror. Similar to previous years, HIMSS18 was filled with timely themes, insightful sessions and myriad networking opportunities.
Common Themes at HIMSS18
There were plenty of meaningful trends and hot topics at HIMSS18, but four stood out above the rest.
Patient Engagement
Solutions that better involve the patient in his or her own healthcare and coordination plans. Check out Bill Siwicki’s review of emerging companies that debuted patient engagement platforms at HIMSS18.
Cybersecurity
Identifying and evading the risk of exposed protected health information (PHI) and other sensitive data. For a recap about cybersecurity discussions presented at HIMSS18, review Jessica Davis’ article from Healthcare IT News.
Connected Health
All things telehealth, including innovative solutions, adoption challenges and success stories. For an overview of an insightful HIMSS18 panel that examined how wearable technology is having a dramatic effect on employee motivation, check out this article by Jonah Comstock.
Artificial Intelligence
Machine learning and artificial intelligence are no longer concepts of the future—solutions are being developed and deployed now. In this article, Jeff Byers shares his perspective of how HIMSS18 helped separate AI “hype” from reality.
New at HIMSS18
This year, HIMSS also introduced a few fun surprises to keep attendees engaged throughout the five-day frenzy: HIMSS TV and Lightning Sessions.
HIMSS TV
HIMSS TV, the “first online broadcasting network focused on global innovation and how technology is driving change in healthcare,” made its debut at HIMSS18. Industry experts focused on empowering patients to shape their own health experiences and building stronger relationships to make better data available at the clinical level.
If you’re interested in tuning into HIMSS TV throughout the year, you can watch online at HIMSS.TV, stream it on your Roku device or visit the HIMSS YouTube channel.
Lightning Sessions
The 20-minute Lightning Sessions at HIMSS18 provided the opportunity to host a variety of hot health topics in a concise, high-level format. Themes throughout the week ranged from cybersecurity and EHR interoperability to patient engagement and the evolution of prescription benefit transparency.
CoverMyMeds’ EHR Platform Product Manager, Nick Anderson, examined the evolution of real-time prescription benefit solutions within a physician’s EHR and reviewed the future of prescription benefit transparency. During his session, Nick emphasized the importance of a solution that is both transparent and accurate in order to become a reliable platform that creates trust among providers and patients alike.
CoverMyMeds at HIMSS18
Aside from our interactive booth at HIMSS18, CoverMyMeds was invited to participate in several speaking engagements throughout the week.
Our VP of Industry Relations, Perry Lewis, participated in a panel discussion about legislative and regulatory solutions that could help curb the tide of opioid misuse. This breakout workshop highlighted what these reforms will mean for the healthcare industry and how attendees can position themselves as thought-leaders in this defining issue by partnering with Health IT Now.
On Wednesday morning, Kim Diehl-Boyd, Director of Industry Relations and Government Affairs, joined a panel of peers moderated by Sloane Salzburg, MS, Executive Director of Prescriptions for a Healthy America. The roundtable format encouraged a lively discussion about the need for technological solutions that coordinate clinical and pharmaceutical data to improve patient adherence and outcomes.
Later that same day, Ryan Tarzy, VP of Provider Strategy and Business Development was joined by RelayHealth’s Senior Product Manager, Stacy Hopkins (pictured above), to present a lunch and learn about the evolution of prescription benefit transparency.
Throughout the presentation, Ryan and Stacy emphasized the importance of enabling providers to have more informed conversations with patients, and including patients in their care plans, in order to help drive medication adherence.
